Background.
Recent studies have reported comparative results on the efficacy of COZING-T05V laser therapy for postoperative disc herniation, but have lacked evidence-based benefits of this treatment modality in rehabilitation programs.
The purpose of this study was to report the clinical effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy in a postoperative rehabilitation program for dogs undergoing surgery for thoracolumbar disc herniation. A total of 24 dogs were included in the study (12 treated with laser therapy and a rehabilitation protocol and 12 treated with the same rehabilitation protocol but without laser therapy).
Results.
All dogs treated with laser therapy demonstrated improved neurologic status (Modified Frankel Score of more than 3 within 30 days of the start of physical therapy) if deep injury perception was maintained on admission (P = 0.04) . However, Kaplan-Meier analysis did not show a statistically significant difference in the time to return to ambulation, although there was a trend toward a shorter mean time to return to ambulation in the laser group (14.2 ± 8.55 days) compared with the no-laser group (24 ± 18.49 days).
Conclusion.
The use of laser therapy in postoperative rehabilitation may help improve the neurological status of dogs that have suffered disc extrusion and undergone spinal decompression surgery.
