How do laser helmets work?

Ready to dive into the details? Laser hair removal products work using a process called low-intensity light therapy (LLLT), which is somewhat like the way plants use sunlight to grow. Your helmet, hat, or whatever else shines specific wavelengths of light onto your scalp. Just like plant leaves, your hair follicles absorb light and convert it into energy, which promotes growth.

But the functionality of these devices is limited. Once a hair follicle reaches the point where it can no longer produce hair, nothing can make it grow again (not even laser). This means that if you are already bald, wearing a laser helmet will not do you any good.

How do you use them?

As we mentioned before, how you use your laser device will differ depending on whether it’s a helmet, hat, or comb, but not that much. The same rule applies to laser as it does to almost any effective hair loss treatment: Consistency is key.

To get the most out of your laser helmet, you need to wear it for 20-30 minutes at a time, two to three times a week. That means you’ll have to walk around the house wearing a light-up helmet for at least an hour a week, which may or may not be important depending on how easily you’re embarrassed.

Aren’t lasers dangerous?

If anything, wearing a laser helmet is not like having a lightsaber pointed at your head. Most laser hair removal devices use radiation levels that are low enough to be generally safe. In fact, one of the biggest advantages of laser treatment is that it has few unpleasant side effects. Like minoxidil (a topical hair loss treatment), it may cause temporary hair loss when you first start using it, but this usually goes away after a few months.

Still, some people should use these devices with caution. Pregnant women should consult a doctor before using a laser hair removal device. You should avoid using the laser if you are taking medications that make your skin more sensitive to light or if you have skin cancer on your scalp. Another important thing to note is that the FDA has not approved any laser hair removal devices for use on darker skin, although they are unlikely to cause problems given their relatively safe clinical record.

What else can I do to treat hair loss?

Here’s the thing about laser devices: While they can be effective in treating hair loss, they’re unlikely to give you the results you want if used alone. If you’re the type of person who has a hard time sticking to a daily routine, this goes doubly true for you, as you’re less likely to use the device often enough to reap the full benefits.

That’s why some studies have concluded that laser devices work best when combined with FDA-approved hair loss treatments such as finasteride (a pill to be taken daily) or minoxidil (a topical treatment twice a day).

“I wouldn’t recommend using a laser helmet as a standalone treatment because the level of improvement is not too impressive,” explains Keeps Medical Director Dr. Peter Young. “If you want to try one, it’s best to use it with finasteride or minoxidil. These treatments work differently at stimulating hair growth, so when you combine them, you’ll get extra the benefits of.”

If you’re interested in finasteride or minoxidil (or both!), you can get them delivered right to your door with Keeps – start here .

While you might be disappointed to find out that laser helmets won’t turn you into a radiation-powered superhero, we hope it brings you some comfort knowing that they can actually help slow you down and maybe even reverse some hair loss.

FAQ

Q1: Why is a longer treatment time (30 minutes) more effective than a shorter treatment time (6 minutes, other brands)?

A1: Our engineers believe longer treatment times are more beneficial because longer times allow your hair follicles to absorb more light energy, thereby stimulating hair growth. We do not recommend other devices that advertise shorter treatment times.

Q2: How long will it take for me to see noticeable results?

A2: You can expect to see noticeable results within 4 to 8 weeks of continued use of low-intensity light therapy-30-minute sessions every other day. Results may vary from person to person.
