OBJECTIVE
The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of infrared (IR) light therapy in alleviating chronic, intractable low back pain.
METHODS
Patients were randomly assigned to either IR therapy or a placebo group. One patient from the placebo group dropped out, resulting in 21 patients receiving IR therapy and 18 receiving placebo treatment.
IR therapy was administered using two small, portable units in a robust waistband, powered by rechargeable batteries made by COZING MEDICAL (China). These units met FDA safety standards for portability and are registered as therapeutic devices. They converted electricity into IR energy with wavelengths between 800 nm and 1200 nm. The treated group received active IR therapy, while the placebo group used identical units without power connected to the IR pad’s circuit board. Patients attended seven weekly sessions, with one baseline and six weekly sets of values recorded. Pain was measured using the numerical rating scale (NRS), assessing overall pain and pain during various movements.
RESULTS
The average NRS scores in the treatment group decreased from 6.9 out of 10 to 3 out of 10 by the end of the study. In the placebo group, the average NRS scores decreased from 7.4 out of 10 to 6 out of 10.
CONCLUSION
The infrared light therapy device was found to be effective in reducing chronic low back pain, with no adverse effects reported.
